Amanda Alguero - one of Answer English’s students - is on the radio! She joins comedian Jen Brister on the Radio 6 weekend overnight slot for the next 13 weeks. If you missed there show, and you could be forgiven for doing so as it’s between 01:00 and 07:00 in the morning on Saturday and Sunday - do not despair. On the last show Amanda gives advice on feng shui. She tries to convey 3 tips Jen could do to improve her life - with a comic twist. Amanda, who comes from Spain, has been taking one to one classes with our teacher Carolyn O’Grady and has been making great strides. Fast-expanding Spanish property development company Raminova, have been in touch with Answer English.  They are looking to recruit a bilingual Administrator to work in their Central London Office.  To be eligible for this role you must have a good command of both Spanish and English.  Based in Covent Garden your duties would include answering the phone to client enquiries, liaising with the sister Spanish office, organising visits and secretarial work.

A great job opportunity has come up for bar staff in a Central London pub.  Yesterday we received a call from the Marylebone Bar & Kitchen asking if we knew of anyone interested in working part or full time.

Full training is provided and you wouldn’t need prior experience, although that would obviously help.  The job would involve waitering during the day and working behind the bar at night.  They pay £5.05 an hour, and you would be expected to do 3 evenings a week.  Letizia one of our students worked there and had a great time.  The staff are friendly and it seems a pleasant working environment.

Are you interested in gaining some practical work experience in the heart of London in a trendy hotel?  Kensingtonrooms are interested in taking on an intern at their centrally located hotel.  We went to see them last week both to have a look around and to check out what the role would involve.

Kensingtonrooms is a recently renovated, modern chic hotel with 88 rooms.  A lot of their business is from conferences, weddings and events and you could be involved in many aspects of the hotel.  In the past couple of years Kensingtonrooms has taken on various interns for two week to 4 month placements.  Set in the heart of Kensington with state-of-the-art facilities this would be a pleasant and enjoyable place to work.

This opportunity is particularly aimed at students interested in eventually working in the hospitality sector.  Amie, who is in charge of events, devises a plan for you depending on what areas you wish to work on.  Maite, a Spanish student that was working there, told me how she had really enjoyed her internship working in every department; from helping clean the rooms at first to being an events assistant when they were running events.

Do you remember that famous 80’s Fosters ad, where the ‘Professor’ steps out of the flash car, surrounded by women and one barman goes to the other ‘okay so he’s got the looks, the car, the brains but would you want to have a drink with him?’ and he strides up to the bar and orders a pint of beer, Fosters naturally.  The imagery saying that this is the complete alpha-male, the man that has everything.  I couldn’t help reminiscing about this popular TV ad when a report came out this week about the need for young school leavers to have practical experience not just academic qualifications.

Educational foundation Edge have found that ‘76% of adults believe that too much emphasis is placed on academic learning.’  Whilst ‘over two-thirds of employers admitted to saying that school and college leavers lack the necessary practical skills valued by industry.’  This got me thinking back to that advertisement, how lots of young people today become perpetual students.  The number of people getting higher qualifications is at an all time high but do they have the practical work experience so valued by employers?

Jesus Garza Garcia is a 26 year-old Mexican MBA graduate who felt he needed more practical experience before entering the job market.  He found an Internship through Aspect with Brandenburg Securities, a Financial and Business Advisory firm.  During his time there Jesus conducted a research project on the performance of the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), evaluating the price performance of stocks based upon monthly pricing statistics.  He also developed a share price assessment model and formed part of the Brandenburg Securities team.  This experience coupled with the improvement of his spoken English will prove invaluable for Jesus in the future.

Why did you come to London?

I just finished a diploma in Accountacy at ITC. Maggidini in Italy.

What does your job involve on a day-to-day basis?
Customer service, working behind the bar, serving food, collecting glasses & plates, taking orders, giving the bill and working the till.

What responsibilities do you have?
Not giving the wrong food to the wrong cusomter!

What are the best bits?
When I understand the customers!

And the worst?
Nothing, I’m very happy where I work, the manager the colleagues they are all nice people.

Do you have to have prior experience?  If so, what helped get you the job?
No.  But you have to be friendly and smile!

How did you go about getting it?
Laura, who works for Answer English, knew the manager and helped arrange an interview for me.  I then had a couple of hours one afternoon work trial (which I was paid for too!)

Any tips you could give our readers?
I was very lucky.  You have to believe in yourself.  Every experience is different, so go for it!  Don’t lose hope if at first you don’t find what you are looking for.

What if any lessons could the AE Blog readers learn from your experience in London?
Carpe Diem!  Everything is possible in London, there are so many things to do, so many opportunities.  Everything is a lesson.

How much do you think your English has improved?
I think it has improved, for sure, especially my listening and speaking skills.  Still lots more to learn though!

With this experience, what do you plan to do next?
For the moment I have to begin university, studying accountancy at Catolica.  I think in the future I would like to work in a big accountancy firm and come back to live in London.  It’s great!
